Texas A&M Announces Chancellor’s National Academy STEM Ph.D. Fellowship Program

The Hagler Institute for Advanced Study has announced the Chancellor’s National Academy STEM Ph.D. Fellowship Program (“Chancellor’s Fellowship”) for outstanding students working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is funded by the Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System, and its purpose is to attract more of the nation’s top students to Texas A&M University and team them with a graduate committee co-led by a national academy member and a rising star faculty member. Collaboration between students, national academy members and rising star faculty is a signature component of this program. Read More

University of Houston Researchers Awarded New Funding for Superconductivity Project

Researchers at the Texas Center for Superconductivity and the Department of Physics at the University of Houston, including TAMEST Member Paul C.W. Chu, Ph.D. (NAS), have received second-year funding from Intellectual Ventures, a global leader in the business of invention, to continue their important study of the retention at atmospheric pressure of high-pressure-induced/enhanced superconductivity. Cancer Bioengineering Collaborative Hosts Kickoff Event, Awards First Round of Seed Grants

Leaders and researchers from Rice University and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center including TAMEST Members Reginald DesRoches, Ph.D. (NAE) and Ramamoorthy Ramesh, Ph.D. (NAE, NAS. FRS), Rice University and Nobel Laureate James Allison, Ph.D. (NAM, NAS), MD Anderson Cancer Center, came together to celebrate the launch of the Cancer Bioengineering Collaborative, first announced earlier this summer. The Cancer Bioengineering Collaborative is a joint initiative between the two institutions created to develop innovative technologies and bioengineering approaches to improve cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Roderic Pettigrew of Texas A&M to Receive the 2024 Research Achievement Award

TAMEST Board Member Roderic I. Pettigrew, M.D., Ph.D. (NAM, NAE), Texas A&M University, Houston Methodist, will be recognized with the 2024 Research Achievement Award at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2024. Dr. Pettigrew was recently appointed Vice Chancellor for Health and Strategic Initiatives for the statewide Texas A&M University System, and he continues to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Engineering Health for Texas A&M in Houston. UTSW Epidemiologist to Receive AHA Distinguished Scientist Award

TAMEST Member Jiang He, M.D., Ph.D. (NAM), Professor and Chair Designate of Epidemiology in the Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health at UT Southwestern Medical Center, is a 2024 recipient of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) highest commendation, the Distinguished Scientist award. The honor recognizes Dr. He’s prolific research on reducing the risks of cardiometabolic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and chronic kidney disease. UT Health San Antonio Ranks Among Top 5% Globally for Clinical Medicine

UT Health San Antonio was ranked No. 51 out of the top 1,000 universities in the world that have a clinical medicine program in the 2024-2025 U.S. News and World Report’s Best Global Universities. UT Health San Antonio ranked No. 269 overall out of the top 2,250 universities in the report, released June 24, placing it among the top 12% of universities in the world. Read More

Clinical Research Imaging Center Opens at The University of Texas at Arlington

The University of Texas at Arlington opened a new $6.2 million Clinical Research Imaging Center (CIRC). Featuring a 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging machine (MRI), the new 3,500-square-foot facility will advance research aimed at unlocking the body’s greatest mysteries. Read More

Texas Biomedical Research Institute Enters Landmark Partnership with Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations

Texas Biomedical Research Institute has entered a global partnership with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). The five-year agreement will see the Institute join CEPI’s specialized preclinical network totaling 16 laboratories worldwide. Under the partnership, Texas Biomed will deliver preclinical research and resources to help develop vaccines for reducing global epidemic and pandemic risks. Read More
