Nominations Are Now Open for the 2024 Edith and Peter O’Donnell Awards
Nominations are now open for the 2024 Edith and Peter O’Donnell Awards. The awards annually recognize rising Texas researchers who are addressing the essential role that science and technology play in society, and whose work meets the highest standards of exemplary professional performance, creativity and resourcefulness.
“The Edith and Peter O’Donnell Awards are a powerful and important award for Texas as a recruitment and retention tool,” said Edith and Peter Awards Committee Chair Oliver Mullins, Ph.D. (NAE), SLB. “It’s wonderful to be a part of the awards committee because you get to look under the hood and see all the tremendous work being done by our up-and-coming researchers across the state.”
Each award includes a $25,000 honorarium and an invitation to present at TAMEST’s Annual Conference each year. Since 2006, 15 O’Donnell Awards recipients have been elected to one of the National Academies and three have been elected to multiple academies.
“The Technology Innovation award helps shine a light on the technical innovators and the companies responsible for major innovations in our state,” said Dr. Mullins, who has previously served as Technology Innovation Subcommittee Chair for the O’Donnell Awards. “It helps companies understand the value of their employees and their commitment to the employees who are going to generate their products. In fact, I think it’s something that is underappreciated in industry.”
Thanks to a $1.15 million gift from the O’Donnell Foundation in 2022, the O’Donnell Awards have expanded to include an additional science award. The awards now recognize recipients in the categories of Medicine, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology Innovation. (Previously, the TAMEST O’Donnell Awards rotated its science award between physical and biological sciences every year.)
An informational session on the awards nomination process will take place on Tuesday, March 7, at 11:00–11: 45 a.m. Central for the Medicine, Engineering, Biological Sciences & Physical Sciences categories and at 2:00–2:45 p.m. Central for the Technology Innovation category. It will be hosted by Edith and Peter O’Donnell Awards Committee Chair Oliver Mullins (NAE), SLB. Registration is required and attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions during the session.
Nominations for the 2024 O’Donnell Awards are open February 1, 2023 – April 30, 2023.
