TAMEST Hosts Final 2022 Mary Beth Maddox Lecture in Dallas with UT Southwestern Medical Center
On Tuesday, November 15, TAMEST teamed up with the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center (Simmons Cancer Center) at UT Southwestern Medical Center to host the final presentation in the 2022 Mary Beth Maddox award lecture series.
Nearly 50 people across Dallas and North Texas registered to attended the lecture, “TET Mediated Epigenetic Regulation in Health and Disease,” presented by 2022 recipient Yun Nancy Huang, Ph.D., Texas A&M Health Institute of Biosciences and Technology.
The Director of the Simmons Cancer Center and Associate Dean of Oncology Programs Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., provided opening remarks for the event alongside TAMEST Board President David E. Daniel, Ph.D. (NAE), UT Dallas. A networking event with refreshments followed the lecture.
Dr. Huang won TAMEST’s inaugural Mary Beth Maddox Award, which recognizes women scientists in Texas bringing new ideas and innovations to the fight against cancer.
She was chosen for contributing prominently to the field of cancer epigenetics, the study of heritable changes to molecular processes affecting the body that influence the flow of information between the DNA of cancer cells and their gene expression patterns. By pioneering cutting-edge technologies, Dr. Huang discovered how to probe DNA hydroxymethylation in cell-free DNA to improve cancer diagnosis and prognosis.
In June, Dr. Huang was recognized on stage at the TAMEST 2022 Annual Conference in San Antonio where she received her award and $5,000 honorarium before presenting her research on the conference stage to the greater research community.
She also presented her lecture in Houston on September 28, which was co-hosted by MD Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine’s Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center.
