Targeting Treatment of Osteogensis Imperfecta

A new study led by TAMEST Board Vice President Brendan Lee, M.D., Ph.D. (NAM), Baylor College of Medicine, identifies an underlying mechanism of pathogenesis for osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in human bone. The report, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, also shows the results of a Phase 1 clinical trial testing the safety and effectiveness of an antibody treatment targeting that pathway. Osteogenesis imperfecta is the most common skeletal dysplasia and causes bone fragility in children and adults. There is no FDA-approved treatment for OI. Read More.

Molecular Imaging Innovator Samuel Achilefu, Ph.D., to Launch, Lead Biomedical Engineering Department at UT Southwestern

TAMEST Member Samuel Achilefu, Ph.D. (NAM), UT Southwestern Medical Center, nationally recognized for expertise in molecular imaging and its application in treating human diseases, has been selected as the inaugural Chair of the new Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at UT Southwestern Medical Center. AMA Honors Houston Physician with Scientific Achievement Award

The American Medical Association (AMA) honored Houston scientist-physician and TAMEST Member Peter J. Hotez, M.D., Ph.D. (NAM), Baylor College of Medicine, with the Scientific Achievement Award for his work on promoting vaccines and combating vaccine misinformation. “As a celebrated champion of vaccines, Dr. Hotez is a deserving recipient of this honor,” said AMA President Gerald E. Harmon, MD. “His background in developing vaccines for tropical diseases that afflict the world’s poorest people proved invaluable as he turned his attention to COVID-19.” The AMA presented the Scientific Achievement Award to Dr. Hotez during the 2022 Texas Medical Association Winter Conference. Several TAMEST Members Elected to the 2021 Class of AAAS Fellows

Congratulations to all TAMEST Members elected to the 2021 class of AAAS Fellows. The 2021 class of AAAS Fellows includes 564 scientists, engineers, and innovators from around the world spanning scientific disciplines. The new Fellows will receive an official certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin to commemorate their election and will be celebrated later this year at an in-person gathering. Read More
